The girls of Dance Moms have spent the past five seasons really perfecting their technique. And we’re not just talking about polishing off their ah-mazing routines, although they’ve certainly crushed the stage a number of times on the hit show. They’ve also been busy becoming total experts when it comes to dealing with drama. From topping off the infamous pyramid to who’s nabbing a solo to girls leaving the Abby Lee Dance Company for rival studios…the dramz never seems to end. But have you ever noticed how poised the girls have remained, even in the midst of their mothers getting into some pretty epic cat fights? I mean, they hardly ever bat a false eyelash. We got to chat with Maddie, Kendall and Nia — they’re in our brand new February issue! — so naturally we had to ask them how they stay so unphazed. “You have to block out the drama and let it go through one ear and out the other,” says Maddie Ziegler. “Realize that girls create it just because. They probably don’t even mean it.” In other words, it’s just not that serious. “You only live once so you can’t worry about it,” says Kendall Vertes. “Life is just too short.” And what says the oldest (and probably wisest) dancer of the group, Nia Sioux? “Never listen to other people when they are being negative and rude,” she says. “Everyone is strong and beautiful and you just have to remember not to give into someone else’s negativity. They are just doing it to get a reaction from you You have to know your worth. Be the star in your own life.” It might seem that their teacher Abby Lee Miller is at the center of most of the show’s controversies, but she’s actually served up some great advice, too. In fact, when asked for their favorite Abbyism, Nia and Maddie separately agreed on this gem: Put your heart out on a platter and let people stab it. “She uses that saying to teach us to never to hold back,” says Nia. “Not everyone is going to like you, but you can’t be afraid of that.” “I know it sounds really intense, but it’s pretty much saying, ‘Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there,'” says Maddie. Preach!
